A high-quality PTO shaft is essential in agriculture, as it transmits the power of the tractor to various agricultural machines attached to it.
Whether you operate a combine harvester, thresher, tedder, or other agricultural attachments such as forestry winches, field sprayers, log splitters, band saws, circular saws, or fertiliser spreaders, our PTO (power take-off) shafts are suitable for all applications in which a PTO shaft serves as power output. Our PTO shafts impress with their high quality and durability. They are made of high-quality materials that remain reliable even under heavy loads and intensive use. Moreover, we offer PTOs for the different power ratings – thus, you can find the perfect model for your specific needs.
The performance data given for the PTO shaft in kW (hp) and Nm refer to an average service life of around 1000 hours, taking into account the necessary lubrication intervals. An increase in the specified power reduces the life expectancy of the drive shaft. A reduction in power increases the life expectancy of the shaft. The performance data given is valid for a deflection angle of 5° with standard joints. It is therefore better to choose a larger PTO shaft than necessary, but never a smaller one.
How do I find the right PTO shaft?
The following factors should be considered when making your selection to ensure that it meets the needs of your specific application:
– Power: The PTO should be able to provide enough power for your attachment. The power is usually given in kW (kilowatts, obsolete unit: hp (horsepower)).
– Rotation speed: The rotation speed of a PTO is measured in revolutions per minute (rpm) and should match the rpm of the attachment. Typically, there are two speeds: 540 rpm and 1000 rpm. It is important not to forget that the power depends on the speed. This is important when choosing the right drive shaft.
– Yoke type: The yoke type is another important factor to consider when purchasing a PTO for your tractor. The yoke (also called “clevis”) is the part of the PTO shaft that connects to the attachment. Be sure to select the correct yoke type for the connection on the tractor and attachment. This is stated in the technical data.
– Length: Determining the length of a power take off (PTO) shaft is a crucial step in ensuring that it will properly fit your tractor and attachment. Follow the steps required to measure the PTO shaft length:
1. Position your attachment: Make sure that your attachment is in the working position and the tractor is parked and secured. The attachment should be in the position in which it is normally used during operation.
2. Determine the measuring point: Measure from the centre of the tractor PTO stub (the point where the PTO shaft is attached to the tractor) to the centre of the inlet on the attachment.
3. Measure the length: Use a tape measure to measure the distance between these two points. This measurement gives you the required length of the PTO shaft.
4. Consider the clearance: Remember that you need some clearance to prevent the shaft from being too tight. It is generally recommended to choose a PTO shaft slightly longer than the measured length to allow flexibility in positioning the attachment.
It is important to note that this measurement is the “closed” length of the PTO, meaning the length that it is when fully retracted – found in our specifications under “Length (min).” Therefore, when ordering, you should ensure that you order a shaft with a “Length (min)” length fitting your measurement. Please note that a shaft too short or too long can cause problems!
Remember to always follow safety precautions when measuring the length of a PTO and use this information to find the correct PTO for your tractor and attachment.
Can the PTO shaft be shortened?
Yes, the PTO shaft can be shortened. This might be necessary if the PTO is too long for your particular tractor or attachment. Here are general steps you can follow to shorten a PTO shaft:
1. Measuring and marking: First measure how much of the shaft you need to cut off. Then mark the spot where you want to cut the shaft.
2. Removing: Pull the sliding sleeve off the shaft. Remove the universal joints and other attachments. In most cases, you will need to remove a snap ring to remove the joint.
3. Cutting: Use a hacksaw to cut off the marked portion of the shaft. Make sure that the cut is as straight as possible.
4. Deburring: Deburr the cut with a file or grinding tool to remove sharp edges.
5. Mounting: Put the sliding sleeve and the universal joints back on the shortened shaft. Make sure that everything is tight and assembled correctly.
